A Fleece Followed Me Home - Now What?INSTRUCTOR: Maggie Casey
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner PREREQUISITE: Students should be able to spin a continuous yarn and be comfortable with their wheel. Beginning Spinning skills and be comfortable with their wheel. MATERIALS: $25 (collected by instructor at class) STUDENTS TO BRING: Working Spinning wheel and all its parts, Lazy Kate and at least 3 bobbins, Wool hand cards, and Combs if you already own them. DESCRIPTION: It all starts with the fleece! We will open one up and do some skirting and discuss what you should look for when choosing a fleece. Then we will prepare fibers from a fine, medium, and long wool fleece. We will card and comb all three types of fleece and spin some woolen and worsted and ply. You will have enough fleece to knit samples with your yarn, so you can discover the perfect combination of preparation and spinning for your project. I will provide fleece, notebooks, drum carders, and wool combs. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Maggie Casey is co-owner of Shuttles, Spindles & Skeins in Boulder, Colorado. She has been addicted to spinning for more than 30 years. Some people have wine cellars; she has a fleece basement. She holds Part 1 of HGA’s COE in Handspinning. Maggie teaches spinning at her shop, Estes Park Wool Market, Maryland Sheep & Wool, Harrisville Designs, John C Campbell Folk School, Yarn Fest, PlyAway, and guild programs around the country. She has been a Skein judge at the Taos Wool Festival, Estes Park Wool Market, Colorado State Fair, and Convergence 2004. She is the author of Start Spinning, Everything You Need to Know to Make Great Yarn, an Interweave Press book. She also has several Interweave DVDs. Contact Instructor |

MATERIALS: None STUDENTS TO BRING: Inkle loom, shuttle, heddles (at least 30) pick up stick (1/2” craft sticks or knitting needles work great), an additional 3- ½” craft sticks scissors, note taking material, two contrasting colors of 3/2 Pearl cotton (about 3-4 oz of each color), 1 or 2 sheets of graph paper, a couple of colored pencils. Continuous Strand Weaving on Large, Adjustable Triangle, Rectangle, and Square Looms
INSTRUCTOR: Bex Oliger
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner PREREQUISITE: None MATERIALS: $25 (collected by instructor at class) Includes use of loom and tools and an instructional handout. Yarns for student projects may be purchased for $30 and up depending on project and yarns used. Students may bring their own yarn, see requirements in materials to bring. STUDENTS TO BRING: Scissors, note paper and pencil. Bring 500-800 yds of heavy worsted to bulky weight yarn or purchase from teacher. Please email instructor for more details. DESCRIPTION: Complete a large triangular shawl, a throw blanket or pillow, or a rectangular scarf using the magical Continuous Strand Weaving Method on our large, adjustable triangle, rectangle or square frame looms. This ingenious technique warps the loom as you weave, and you only have to do half the weaving! Basic weaves, color changes, twills, connecting and fixing pieces, and fringing will be covered in class. Great for using handspun yarns as there are no reeds and heddles to thread and there is no loom waste! INSTRUCTOR BIO: Bex Oliger grew up in her mother’s (Carol Leigh Brack-Kaiser) Hillcreek Fiber Studio. She started learning weaving and dyeing at a young age and has traveled the country for over 35 years with the family business vending and teaching at fiber, weaving, and knitting Shows. She helped design and weave several of the projects in Carol Leigh’s book, The Continuous Strand Weaving Method and assisted at numerous Natural Dye Workshops featured in Nature Provides: Rainbows of Color. Bex is now a knitwear designer; knitting, weaving, and natural dyeing instructor and consultant; and owns Hillcreek Yarn Shoppe in Columbia, MO. Contact Instructor |
