A ColorFULL Introduction to Dyeing (Yarn)
INSTRUCTOR: Peggy Doney
CATEGORY: Dyeing SKILL LEVEL: All PREREQUISITE: None MATERIAL FEES: $25.00 Fee collected by the Instructor at the Workshop. STUDENTS TO BRING: Apron, pen or pencil, and should wear dye-worthy old clothes and comfortable close-toed shoes (not sandals). DESCRIPTION: How much water do I use? Hot or cold water? Can I dye just any yarn? Acid? What do you mean ACID? I don’t know what I’m doing! Will I get muddy colors? If you have a bazillion questions like these, fear not, and learn low-water immersion dyeing and skein painting! We’ll cover dyes, mixing up dyes, washing, do I have to measure, and more. Just bring a sense of adventure, take some baby steps, and leave with two skeins that you can brag on. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Peggy Doney has been fascinated with color since her first box of crayons. For many years, she has been discovering color recipes using triad, value, and gradient studies. If there is anything that Peggy enjoys as much as creating with fiber and color, it’s sharing that passion with others. From an annual fiber arts gathering in her backyard to teaching workshops for guilds, retreats, festivals, and one-on-one sharing, Peggy likes to pass on her excitement for fiber and color. Peggy knows all the dyeing jokes, has a plethora of dye pots, and now uses her big box of crayons as a reference material. She makes her home in Colorado Springs with her fiber-enabler husband, Jeff, and two undyed white dogs. Contact Instructor |

Stitch Chart Bootcamp
INSTRUCTOR: Andee Graves
CATEGORY: Crochet SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate PREREQUISITE: Very confident with basic crochet stitches (ch, sc, hdc, dc, slip st). MATERIAL FEES: $5.00 Fee collected by the Instructor at the Workshop. STUDENTS TO BRING: 60 yards of smooth light colored worsted weight yarn, Size G (4 mm) thru J (6 mm) hooks, scissors, stitch markers, yarn/tapestry needle. Pen or Pencil for note taking. DESCRIPTION: Have you ever wondered exactly where the next crochet stitch is supposed to go? You know that the stitch chart probably holds the answer to this question. You may have even referred to a chart in a crochet pattern that uses both text and chart, but are you ready to work from only the chart? A whole world of international patterns opens to you when you can decipher stitch charts, even if you don’t understand the written language that accompanies the chart. In this workshop, you will learn how to work solely from a stitch chart to crochet a lovely motif. You’ll learn what the symbols in the charts stand for, how they may change depending on the country of origin, and the skill to get results that please you when working from the charts alone. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Andee Graves is a crochet designer, writer, teacher and artist living in the mountains of Colorado with her family and an evolving menagerie of 4-legged friends. She combines a life-long passion for crocheting, sewing, and crafting with a strong interest in mathematics and medical science. She is endlessly intrigued by the "magic" of creating fabric or an object from nothing but fiber and string, and invites you to join her in a class to expand your own crochet and crafting journey. Andee enjoys teaching crochet and needle felting classes to students of all ages. She is a Craft Yarn Council certified Crochet Instructor. She has taught classes and private lessons at her local yarn shop and schools, as well as at national festivals and conferences. She loves the versatility of crochet and enjoys designing projects that are entertaining to work up. She is passionate about passing on the crochet techniques that she has learned and teaching others the joy of working with yarn and hook. She has been a member of the Crochet Guild of America since 2008 and served on the National Board of Directors from January 2018 through July 2020. Andee has been writing about crochet techniques, designing, and healthy crafting practices for her blog and other publications since 2009. Her articles and designs have been published in Interweave Crochet, Crochet World, Crochet! Magazine, ILikeCrochet.com, and RedHeart.com. Her independent pattern line M2H Designs was launched in Fall 2010. Freestyle Weaving for the Creative Spirit
INSTRUCTOR: Liza Q Wirtz
CATEGORY: Weaving SKILL LEVEL: All PREREQUISITE: No previous experience with weaving required (though experienced weavers are as welcome as complete novices). Freestyle weaving is intended to be accessible to everyone, no matter their level of skill or knowledge. Class open to students 8 years old and up; students must be tall enough to reach the floor pedals on the looms and able to focus for the duration of the class. MATERIAL FEES: $50 will cover: use of warped two-harness floor loom; use of associated tools (shuttles, bobbins, etc.); access to and use of a wide variety of different weaving materials, including yarn in various fibers, colors, and textures, embroidery floss, fabric scraps, fiber, trim, beads, wire, Mylar, etc. Each student will also get a bag of fibery treasures to keep; these can be used in class, in a future weaving project, or both. Fee collected by the Instructor at the Workshop. STUDENTS TO BRING: Class has no homework, and students don't have to bring anything; instructor will provide all necessary tools and materials. If students want to bring something personally meaningful to them to incorporate into their weaving if possible, they're welcome–indeed, encouraged–to do so. Some past examples: specialty paper, pieces of jewelry (this is a fun use for unmatched earrings and stray pendants), dyed or undyed fiber, leftover quantities of treasured yarn too small to knit or crochet into a finished item. Otherwise, students just need to bring their willingness to experiment and explore–and to practice imperfection! DESCRIPTION: Weave your heart! Learn to weave freestyle and free-spirited on a simple, easy-to-use floor loom. Honor your inner sense of beauty and truth as you play with color, texture, and technique, and come away with a unique piece of woven art that reflects your creative spirit (yes, you do have one!). Students will learn the basic skills of freestyle weaving on a highly approachable two-harness floor loom. The class will emphasize play, experimentation, and individual exploration of color and texture in the service of personal expression; a few simple weaving techniques will be taught along the way. Students will take home what they weave. INSTRUCTOR BIO: Liza Q. Wirtz, better known as Q (aka the Chief Feline), runs multifaceted fiber-arts business The Foldout Cat from her home studio in Alabama with the frequent and welcome assistance of partners Fiber J and Maker J and the help of a fluctuating number of cats. Having spent several past lives in other occupations–including bookseller, lawyer, and professional singer–Q now works fulltime towards earning her living as an artist and a creative. Q has been weaving in a freestyle/free-spirited tradition since 2015, carding for five years, spinning for more than four years, and dyeing for a year and a half. She teaches freestyle weaving, art-batt carding, and basic experiential spinning with the same philosophy that infuses her praxis: create from your heart, make what gives you joy, and put beauty into the world. Q wholeheartedly believes that everyone's an artist and that giving people access to fiber-arts tools and learning lets them prove it to themselves. Q also makes and sells one-of-a-kind art batts built from the Foldout Cat's unique Batt Buffet, handspun yarn, hand-dyed microbatch yarn and fiber, finished fiber-arts items, and simple fiber-arts tools. She has taught, vended, or both at fiber events and workshops in multiple states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
